After a few test phases, the new continent of Oshur is finally deployed on PlanetSide 2 live servers. The new island zone promises massive and strategic confrontations.
Within the PlanetSide 2 development team, the new continent of Oshur was first mentioned in 2018. The project took much longer than expected to come to fruition, but this new theater of massive clashes is finally being rolled out to the MMOFPS’ live servers.
For the record, the continent of Oshur takes the form of a vast archipelago composed of a multitude of tropical islands. According to the teams at Rogue Planet Studio (a subsidiary of Daybreak Game), the area is designed so that each player has a tactical role to play in conquering the map’s strategic objectives – infantry on the beaches will need armor support and air support, and some infrastructure can only be accessed by air.
And if the continent of Oshur took so long to be deployed, it’s mainly because the developer took the opportunity to completely revise its management of maritime spaces: vehicles have specific behaviors (tracked vehicles move on the sea bed, wheeled vehicles stay on the surface, hovercrafts float above the water, while air vehicles move under the waves like submarines). The ballistics of projectile weapons are subject to the resistance of water and the game is equipped with new specifically underwater weapons.
For those curious who would like to join a squad and venture into the heart of the Oshuer continent, PlanetSide 2 is distributed as a free-to-play game on PC and PS4, notably via the official website.
