In 2021, Nintendo sold 5.3 million Switch consoles in Japanese retail. This is reported by GamesIndustry.biz, citing data from the Japanese publication Famitsu. Accounted for all sales of the three available on the market Switch models (OLED, Standard and Lite) in the period from December 28, 2020 to December 19, 2021.
Last year’s final Nintendo Switch sales in Japan were five times higher than all other consoles combined. The PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X | S along with Nintendo 3DS combined managed to find 1.1 million buyers in the Land of the Rising Sun. That being said, the PlayStation 5 surpassed its Xbox Series X|S competitor by ten times.
Sales figures divided by console:
- PlayStation 5 – 942,798
- PlayStation 4 – 103,786
- Xbox Series X | S – 95,598
- Nintendo 3DS – 28,224
Nintendo Switch’s current numbers are comparable to 2020, when the Japanese platformer managed to sell 5.1 million consoles of the hybrid family between December 30, 2019 and December 6, 2020.
The drivers of good Nintendo Switch sales in 2021 were Monster Hunter Rise, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. Among last year’s bestsellers in Japan, they settled in first, second and fourth place, respectively.
