Rockstar Games gives away the iconic GTA Trilogy

Rockstar Games, as promised, distributed the original GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas to all owners of the GTA Definitive Edition remaster collection for free. All three games should automatically appear in the Rockstar Games Launcher library.

Unfortunately, the promotion is available only for PC players. The collection owners on the PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch consoles will not receive anything. The original trilogy will be issued to anyone buying The Definitive Edition before July 1, 2022.

In the future, the company plans to return the original games for sale, but only in the form of a collection and only in the official Rockstar store.

Worth mentioning that after the unsuccessful launch, Rockstar Games apologized for the quality of the remasters and promised to fix numerous bugs. And there is a lot of work to be done. Literally, in the first hours after the release of the games, YouTube was flooded with video compilations of funny, annoying, and game-breaking bugs.  Meanwhile, Rockstar asked users not to harass developers on social media.

Is it Rockstar Games’ fault?

By the way, the development of updated versions of classic GTA was not done by Rockstar Games itself, but by Grove Street Games studio, responsible for the ports of three games to mobile devices.

As it turned out, Grove Street Games managed to update Vice City the best of all three games, as Digital Foundry reports. Perhaps the reason is that the original game’s design is best suited for this.

At the same time, the game has enough problems — the textures enlarged with the help of AI look bad, the characters’ faces look like plastic, not to mention the abundance of bugs. Even the sand on the beaches looks artificial. However, comparing the new Vice City with the two other games is the best game presented.

But San Andreas, according to Digital Foundry, is frankly disappointing because the graphics in the game turned out to be much worse than in VC. This concerns the absence of volumetric fog and other aspects. The performance also is not the strongest side of the remastered game. The games work relatively well on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, producing about 30 FPS in performance mode. And on the Switch, the frame rate does not exceed 20 FPS.

Moreover, the blame may partly lie on the Unreal Engine since it supports modern technologies for games. Therefore, old games may look strange running on this engine.
